    About

StudioCanal started life in 1984 as Canal+ Production, a subsidiary of the French pay-TV channel Canal+. Founder Pierre Lescure wanted to reduce the channel's dependence on American major studios by building its own film library. The company went through several name changes, Le Studio Canal+, Canal+ D.A., before settling on StudioCanal in 2000. Over the years it absorbed Nu Image, Embassy Pictures, Carolco Pictures, and Orange Studio, among others. By September 2025 it owned 13 production companies across Europe and the United States.

What sets StudioCanal apart is its enormous catalogue of over 9,400 titles from more than 60 countries, spanning 100 years of film history. It's the largest European film library and one of the most prestigious globally. The company finances, produces, and distributes roughly 80 to 200 films per year and over 15 series annually. Its reach covers nine major European markets plus Australia, New Zealand, with offices in the United States and China. Recent hits include the Paddington films (which grossed around $500 million worldwide) and Non-Stop (over $220 million).

StudioCanal has invested nearly €25 million into 4K restoration of about 1,000 classic feature films over the past seven years. It operates specialized divisions like StudioCanal Kids & Family, StudioCanal Original, StudioCanal Stories, StudioCanal On Stage, and StudioCanal GmbH. In 2024 it launched a UK-based genre label called Sixth Dimension, headed by Jed Benedict. The company continues to expand its IP, with a reboot of John Carpenter's Escape From New York in development and a strategic agreement with IMG to represent its content library for immersive attractions.
