Street Fighter
"The world warrior tournament begins."
Overview
Street Fighter is a Japanese media franchise centered on a series of fighting games developed and published by Capcom. The first game was released in arcades on August 12, 1987, and the franchise has since become one of the most influential in video game history. It is credited with establishing and popularizing the one-on-one fighting game genre, introducing iconic characters like Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li, and mechanics such as special moves executed through specific joystick and button combinations.
The series has sold 59 million units worldwide as of May 2026, making it one of Capcom's flagship franchises and the longest-running fighting game series in continuous production. Its 1991 entry, Street Fighter II, revolutionized the genre and spawned a global competitive scene, including the Evolution Championship Series (EVO), where Street Fighter has been a mainstay since 1996.
Beyond games, the franchise has expanded into films, animated series, comics, and merchandise. It was inducted into the World Video Game Hall of Fame in 2020, and its characters have become pop culture icons referenced in movies like Wreck-It Ralph and Ready Player One. The most recent mainline entry, Street Fighter 6 (2023), reinvigorated the community with cross-play, rollback netcode, and a new hub world called Battle Hub.
Gameplay
Street Fighter games are one-on-one fighting games where players select a character from a diverse roster and engage in best-of-three rounds battles. The core mechanics include blocking, throwing, and executing special moves through precise joystick and button inputs, such as the iconic Hadouken (fireball) and Shoryuken (dragon punch). Combos, which chain attacks together, were popularized by Street Fighter II and are now a staple of the genre. Each character has a unique fighting style, special moves, and a super meter that builds during combat, enabling powerful techniques. The series is known for its precise timing, strategic spacing, and high-skill execution.
Later entries introduced additional systems: Street Fighter III added the parry mechanic, Street Fighter IV introduced focus attacks and ultra combos, and Street Fighter V featured a V-System with V-Triggers and V-Reversals. Street Fighter 6 (2023) brought a new Drive System that allows for five different abilities, including parries, rushes, and overdrive moves, all tied to a single gauge. The game also includes a single-player World Tour mode with RPG elements and a social hub called Battle Hub where players can compete, spectate, and play classic arcade games.
Story
The overarching narrative of Street Fighter centers on the World Fighting Tournament, often organized by the shadowy criminal organization Shadaloo and its leader, M. Bison. The protagonist, Ryu, is a disciplined Japanese martial artist traveling the world to hone his skills and master the Satsui no Hado, a dark power that tempts him. His rival and best friend, Ken Masters, is an American fighter with a similar style but a more flamboyant approach. Other key characters include Chun-Li, a Chinese Interpol agent seeking revenge for her father's murder; Guile, an American Air Force veteran; and Zangief, a Russian professional wrestler.
Each game advances the timeline: Street Fighter II (1991) introduces the tournament narrative and Shadaloo's plot for world domination. Street Fighter III focuses on the secret organization Illuminati and a new protagonist, Alex. Street Fighter IV and V bridge gaps, expanding on Shadaloo's downfall and the rise of the rival organization S.I.N. Street Fighter 6 (2023) introduces a new setting with the Street Fighter League, a global fighting circuit, and features multiple story paths through World Tour mode, where players create their own avatar and interact with iconic characters.
