Astraea Hill exists only in the imagination, a fictional campus where three all-girls schools, St. Miator's, St. Spica, and St. Lulim, share grounds and strict traditions. The narrative launched in 2005 with light novels from MediaWorks, introducing readers to the Etoile system, a student leadership hierarchy that drives much of the romantic tension. Sakurako Kimino penned the original stories while Chitose Maki provided initial illustrations before Namuchi Takumi assumed duties for the manga serialization. This structure allowed the franchise to explore intimate relationships among teenagers without relying on adult supervision or modern technology.

Madhouse adapted the concept into a 26-episode anime series that aired between October 2006 and March 2007. Media Blasters licensed the show for English distribution, marking one of the earliest official releases of yuri content in North America. Seven Seas Entertainment followed suit by publishing the manga and light novels, cementing the title as a pioneer in bringing this specific genre to Western audiences. A PlayStation 2 visual novel released in 2006 expanded the experience further, though it remains less accessible than the animated version.

The franchise never achieved mainstream commercial status but cultivated a dedicated cult following through its unique blend of comedy and drama. While some critics compared the work to Maria-sama ga Miteru, noting similarities in setting and tone, Strawberry Panic! distinguished itself with exaggerated humor and a focus on the absurdity of school rivalries.
