Stargate Atlantis

Stargate Atlantis premiered on Syfy in July 2004, spinning off from Stargate SG-1 with a fresh setting and a darker tone. The show follows an international expedition that steps through a Stargate and finds itself in the lost city of Atlantis, buried under an ocean in the Pegasus Galaxy. Cut off from Earth and low on power, the team must survive in a city of Ancient technology while facing a terrifying new enemy: the Wraith, who drain humans of their life force. Over five seasons and 100 episodes, the series blends high-stakes survival with character-driven storytelling, anchored by Joe Flanigan as pilot John Sheppard, David Hewlett as the neurotic genius Rodney McKay, and Rachel Luttrell as the Athosian warrior Teyla Emmagan. Jason Momoa joined in season two as Ronon Dex, a fierce hunter from a Wraith-devastated world.

The show was filmed at The Bridge Studios in Vancouver, where the Atlantis set, one of the largest ever built for TV, included a control room on a hydraulic gimbal for spaceflight sequences. Joel Goldsmith composed the score, and visual effects house Rainmaker Entertainment handled the space battles and city flyovers. With a budget around $1.4 million per episode, the series relied on practical effects and early CGI to bring the Pegasus Galaxy to life. The Wraith required three to four hours of prosthetic makeup per actor, designed to be more menacing than SG-1's Goa'uld. Dr. Elizabeth Weir leads a multinational team through the Stargate to the Ancient city of Atlantis, buried under an ocean in the Pegasus Galaxy. Major John Sheppard, a pilot with a natural affinity for Ancient technology, becomes the team's military leader. Dr. Rodney McKay, a brilliant but arrogant astrophysicist, provides the scientific firepower. Teyla Emmagan, a warrior from the Athosian people, serves as a cultural liaison and fighter. Season one focuses on the expedition's arrival, their struggle to power the city, and first encounters with the Wraith. Season two intensifies the threat as the Wraith awaken en masse, and the team gains a new ally in Ronon Dex, a survivor from a ravaged world. The Daedalus-class battleship provides a regular connection to Earth, but political pressures mount.

Season three introduces the Asurans, a rogue faction of replicator-like beings created by the Ancients, who pose a threat even greater than the Wraith. The season explores the moral complexities of using Wraith-derived technologies. Season four sees Samantha Carter take command of Atlantis, while the team faces a Wraith super-hive and an existential threat from the Asurans. Season five brings Richard Woolsey as the new civilian leader, introduces the Travelers, a nomadic human faction, and builds toward a final confrontation that tests the expedition's resolve and ingenuity.
