In 1966, television audiences met the crew of the USS Enterprise, a starship from a future where humanity had overcome war, poverty, and prejudice to explore the galaxy. Created by Gene Roddenberry, Star Trek started as a low-budget NBC series that struggled in ratings but found a passionate audience in reruns. The show followed Captain James T. Kirk, First Officer Spock, and the rest of the Enterprise crew on missions of discovery and diplomacy, often tackling social issues through allegory. Roddenberry drew inspiration from Horatio Hornblower novels, Gulliver's Travels, and the film Forbidden Planet, blending swashbuckling adventure with optimistic humanism.

Over five decades, the franchise has grown into a multimedia empire spanning eleven television series, thirteen films, and countless novels, comics, and games. The original series ran for three seasons before cancellation in 1969, but its afterlife in syndication ignited a fan movement that led to an animated series and eventually a feature film in 1979. The franchise's cultural footprint is massive: fans, known as Trekkies, have created a constructed language (Klingon), built replica sets, and turned conventions into annual pilgrimages. The franchise has grossed over $10 billion worldwide, with the 2009 reboot directed by J.J. Abrams earning $385 million globally.

Corporate ownership rests with Paramount Global, which manages the brand through CBS Studios for television and Paramount Pictures for film. Since 2017, Alex Kurtzman has served as the primary architect of the modern television era, overseeing series such as Discovery, Picard, Strange New Worlds, and the animated comedies Lower Decks and Prodigy. The brand's streaming home, Paramount+, has become the exclusive platform for new Star Trek content, positioning the franchise as a key driver of subscriber growth in the competitive streaming landscape.[edit]
