Star Fox
Overview
Star Fox, released in 1993 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, is a rail shooter that places the player in control of Fox McCloud, piloting an Arwing fighter through fully 3D, polygonal environments. The game automatically moves the player's ship along a fixed path, requiring them to focus on aiming and shooting waves of enemy fighters, turrets, and obstacles. Players can perform defensive maneuvers like somersaults and a barrel roll to deflect incoming projectiles. The game features a branching path system, allowing players to choose which levels to tackle after completing certain stages, offering replayability. Alongside Fox, the player commands wingmates Falco Lombardi, Slippy Toad, and Peppy Hare, who provide assistance and commentary during missions.
The story follows Fox McCloud, the new leader of the Star Fox team, a band of anthropomorphic animal mercenaries. They are hired by General Pepper of the planet Corneria to defend the Lylat System from the evil scientist Dr. Andross. The team pilots their Arwing fighters through a series of planets and asteroid fields, ultimately confronting Andross in his fortress to stop his plans for conquest.
Star Fox was developed by Nintendo Entertainment Analysis & Development in collaboration with Argonaut Software, with lead programmer Jez San and composer Hajime Hirasawa. It is a landmark title for being the first Nintendo game to use real-time polygonal 3D graphics, made possible by the Super FX chip, a custom coprocessor built into the game cartridge. A noted technical limitation was a low and sometimes unstable frame rate, which could become unplayable in some places. Despite this, the game received strong reviews for its graphics and gameplay, selling over 4 million copies worldwide. It inspired a direct sequel, Star Fox 2, which was completed but shelved until its release on the Super NES Classic Edition in 2017. The series was later rebooted with Star Fox 64 in 1997, which refined the formula. The original game has been re-released on the Super NES Classic Edition and via Nintendo's Classics service, ensuring new audiences can experience this pioneering title.
Gameplay
Star Fox is a rail shooter where the player automatically moves through levels along a fixed path. The player controls an Arwing fighter, aiming and firing at enemy ships, turrets, and obstacles. Defensive maneuvers include a somersault and a barrel roll that can deflect enemy fire. The game uses a branching path system: after completing certain stages, the player can choose from multiple routes, leading to different levels and endings. This adds replayability as players can explore all paths. Each level ends with a boss fight. The player has a shield that depletes upon taking damage, and can collect power-ups to restore health or enhance weapons. Wingmates Falco, Slippy, and Peppy appear in the game, offering advice or warnings, but their effectiveness is limited; they can be shot down by enemies, which results in a humorous comment but no penalty.
Story
Fox McCloud, the newly appointed leader of the Star Fox team, accepts a mission from General Pepper of Corneria to stop Dr. Andross, a mad scientist who has declared war on the Lylat System. The team flies through Corneria, then branches into different planets such as Meteo, Fortuna, and Macbeth, each with its own hazards and enemies. Andross has built a fortress on Venom, the final planet. After defeating Andross in his true form, the team returns to Corneria as heroes. The game has multiple endings depending on the path taken, including a secret ending if the player completes the game on hard difficulty. The story is minimal but effectively sets up the conflict and characters.
