About
Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli, commonly known as SSC Napoli or simply Napoli, is an Italian professional football club based in Naples, Campania. The club competes in Serie A, the top tier of Italian football. Napoli has won four Serie A titles, six Coppa Italia titles, three Supercoppa Italiana trophies, and the UEFA Cup. They are the reigning Italian champions, having secured their fourth Scudetto in the 2024–25 season.
The club was formed in 1926 as Associazione Calcio Napoli following the merger of US Internazionale Napoli and Naples Foot-Ball Club. Early success was limited until the 1962 Coppa Italia victory. The arrival of Diego Maradona in 1984 transformed the club, leading to two league titles, a Coppa Italia, a Supercoppa Italiana, and the 1989 UEFA Cup. After Maradona's departure, Napoli faced financial struggles, relegation, and bankruptcy before being re-founded in 2004 by film producer Aurelio De Laurentiis. The club returned to Serie A in 2007 and has since become a consistent top-tier side.
Napoli plays its home matches at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, renamed in 2020 after the legendary player. The club's traditional colors are sky blue shirts, white shorts, and sky blue socks. Napoli has the fourth-largest fan base in Italy by attendance and maintains fierce rivalries with Juventus, Roma, Internazionale, AC Milan, and Salernitana. The club anthem is Napoli by Nino D'Angelo.
History
Napoli was founded on August 1, 1926, as Associazione Calcio Napoli, merging US Internazionale Napoli and Naples Foot-Ball Club. The club's early years were modest, with its first major trophy coming in 1962 by winning the Coppa Italia. The 1970s saw another Coppa Italia win in 1976, but the golden era began in 1984 when Diego Maradona joined from Barcelona. Under Maradona, Napoli won its first Serie A title in 1987, followed by the UEFA Cup in 1989 and a second league title in 1990. Maradona's departure in 1991 triggered a decline, culminating in relegation to Serie B in 1998 and bankruptcy in 2004.
Film producer Aurelio De Laurentiis re-founded the club as Napoli Soccer in 2004, later reverting to SSC Napoli. The club climbed back to Serie A in 2007 under coach Edoardo Reja. The modern era brought three Coppa Italia titles (2012, 2014, 2020) and two Supercoppa Italiana wins (2014, 2025–26). Under Luciano Spalletti, Napoli won the Scudetto in 2022–23, ending a 33-year drought. Antonio Conte led the club to a fourth league title in 2024–25, decided on the final matchday with a 1–0 win over Udinese. In May 2026, an American consortium led by Underdog Global Partners made a €2 billion offer to acquire the club, but De Laurentiis stated Napoli is not for sale.
