About
On a Sunday afternoon in 1991, Brazilian TV viewers flipped to a new channel and saw live football from the Maracanã. That was SporTV's debut, a premium pay-television sports network launched by Globosat, the programming arm of Grupo Globo. The country's largest media conglomerate saw a gap in the market for dedicated sports content on cable and satellite, and filled it with a single channel that soon grew into a three-channel powerhouse: SporTV, SporTV 2, and SporTV 3. Each broadcasts 24/7, covering live events across different time zones and sports.
High-definition simulcasts of the first two channels launched on January 18, 2013, replacing earlier HD broadcasts on the sister channel Globosat HD. By 2013, SporTV had become the third most-watched channel on Brazilian pay television overall and the top sports channel, with SporTV 2 at 19th and SporTV 3 at 39th. Its lineup includes the Brazilian Série A football league, Copa do Brasil, UEFA Champions League, Formula 1, MotoGP, tennis Grand Slams, NBA, and Olympic events. Original programming like Redação SporTV, Seleção SporTV, and Boleiragem brings expert analysis and debate.
In 2024, SporTV renewed its broadcasting rights for Série A and Copa do Brasil through 2029. It launched a FAST channel on Globoplay and introduced 4K broadcasts for select football matches in early 2025, a first for a Brazilian sports network. Women's sports coverage has expanded to include the Brasileirão Feminino and the FIFA Women's World Cup. Despite criticism over its parent company's overlapping interests in sports rights, SporTV remains the dominant sports network in Brazil, deeply integrated with Globo's broadcast and digital ecosystem.
