Villanova Wildcats

The Villanova Wildcats represent Villanova University, a private Augustinian Catholic school founded in 1842 in the Philadelphia suburb of Villanova, Pennsylvania. The Wildcats field 24 varsity teams across NCAA Division I, with the men's basketball and football programs drawing the most attention. Most sports compete in the Big East Conference, while football is a member of the Patriot League (FCS) and women's rowing rows in the Coastal Athletic Association. The university's athletic identity is deeply rooted in the Philadelphia Big Five, the historic round-robin basketball rivalry among five city schools: Villanova, La Salle, Penn, Saint Joseph's, and Temple.

Men's basketball is the crown jewel. The program has won three NCAA national championships (1985, 2016, 2018) and holds the highest winning percentage in NCAA tournament history through the 2024-25 season. The football team captured an FCS national championship in 2009 and has won multiple conference titles. The Wildcats' primary venues are the on-campus Finneran Pavilion (basketball, capacity 6,500) and Villanova Stadium (football, capacity 12,000). The men's basketball program played its first season in 1920-21. Rollie Massimino took over in 1973 and built a national contender. In 1985, the eighth-seeded Wildcats pulled off one of the biggest upsets in sports history, beating top-seeded Georgetown 66-64 in the national title game. The run included wins over Michigan, Maryland, and North Carolina. The program entered a golden era under Jay Wright, who arrived in 2001. Wright led the Wildcats to NCAA championships in 2016 (on Kris Jenkins' buzzer-beating three-pointer against North Carolina) and 2018 (a dominant 79-62 win over Michigan). He retired in 2022 with a 520-197 record and two national titles. Kyle Neptune, a former Wright assistant, took over.

Football has been played since the 1890s. The Wildcats won the FCS national championship in 2009 by defeating Montana 23-21. They have also claimed multiple Atlantic 10 and CAA conference titles. The program moved from the CAA to the Patriot League in 2024, a shift that aligned football with the university's academic and geographic priorities. [edit]
