About
Based in Saitama, the Urawa Red Diamonds operate as a cornerstone of professional soccer in Japan. The club traces its lineage to a company team founded by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries in 1950 before reorganizing into its current professional structure on January 1, 1996. This transition coincided with the launch of the J.League, marking the start of an era where the three-diamond logo became synonymous with top-tier competition.
The squad plays its home matches at the massive Saitama Stadium 2002, a venue capable of holding over 63,000 spectators. This facility replaced the older Urawa Komaba Athletic Stadium and serves as the central hub for the team's intense fan culture. Supporters known as the Reds Army fill the stands to create a distinct atmosphere during domestic league fixtures and continental campaigns.
Historical achievements define the club's identity more than recent fluctuations. Urawa secured the Emperor's Cup eight times, a record shared with other top clubs, and claimed the J1 League title once in 2006. Their most significant international success came when they won the AFC Champions League in both 2007 and 2022, establishing themselves as a dominant force on the Asian stage.
History
The organization began as Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Football Club in 1950. It evolved through various structural changes, eventually merging with local amateur side Urawa SC to form the entity that entered the J.League in 1992 under the name Mitsubishi Urawa. The club officially adopted the name Urawa Red Diamonds in early 1996 to align with the new professional league requirements and honor its corporate heritage.
Domestic dominance arrived swiftly after the professional debut. The team captured the Emperor's Cup in 1992, 1994, 1998, 2005, 2006, 2016, 2017, and 2018. They also won the J1 League championship in 2006 and the Japanese Super Cup multiple times. On the continental front, the 2007 AFC Champions League victory was a landmark achievement that validated their status as a regional powerhouse.
Recent seasons have seen the club navigate periods of inconsistency. During the 2026/2027 campaign, the team struggled with offensive output and defensive stability, sitting in 11th place by October 2026. Despite these challenges, the club continues to rely on a mix of experienced veterans and developing domestic talent while maintaining its core identity.
