    About

The Turkey men's national football team, officially recognized as Türkiye by FIFA and UEFA, represents the country in international association football. Managed by the Turkish Football Federation since its establishment in 1923, the squad has competed on the global stage for over a century. Their first official match took place that same year, followed by six Olympic appearances starting in 1924. The team reached the quarter-finals twice during those early decades, laying a competitive foundation that would eventually lead to modern achievements.

Nicknamed Ay-Yıldızlılar (Crescent-Stars) due to the crescent and star motif on their kit, the team embodies a deep-rooted sporting culture within the nation. While they have not secured a European Championship title, they consistently qualified for major tournaments including Euro 2000, Euro 2008, Euro 2016, and the 2024 edition. Their primary home venue is the Türk Telekom Stadium in Istanbul, a modern facility with a capacity exceeding 50,000 spectators, though they occasionally utilize other stadiums like the Ali Sami Yen Spor Kompleksi for training or specific matches.

    History

Turkey reached the semi-finals of the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where they finished in third place, marking a historic high point for the nation's football history. They also secured third place at the 2003 Confederations Cup. The coaching history features several prominent figures who shaped the team's identity, including Fatih Terim, Mircea Lucescu, Şenol Güneş, Stefan Kuntz, and Vincenzo Montella. Fatih Terim holds a legendary status, having managed the team multiple times, including leading them to the 2002 World Cup semi-finals. In recent years, Italian manager Vincenzo Montella took charge of the squad and remained head coach through the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In June 2026, the team competed in the 2026 FIFA World Cup held in North America. During Group D play, Türkiye faced host nation USA on June 26, 2026. Despite the USMNT advancing to the knockout round, Turkey defeated the United States 3-2 in a high-scoring encounter. However, the team's overall campaign concluded without advancing to the knockout stages, as reports indicated their hopes fell apart earlier in the group stage. Following this exit, Coach Vincenzo Montella publicly defended his players against media and fan criticism regarding the level of scrutiny directed at the squad.
