About
Trabzonspor is a Turkish professional sports club based in Trabzon, a city on the Black Sea coast in northeastern Turkey. Founded in 1967 from the merger of several local clubs, it has become one of the country's most decorated football teams. The men's football side has won seven Süper Lig titles, famously becoming the first club outside Istanbul to claim the championship. Beyond football, Trabzonspor fields teams in women's football, men's basketball, and other sports, making it a true multi-sport institution.
The club's golden era arrived in the 1970s and 1980s, when they dominated Turkish football by winning six league titles between 1975–76 and 1983–84. This period established Trabzonspor as a powerhouse and a symbol of regional pride, challenging the Istanbul giants Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray, and Beşiktaş. They also collected nine Turkish Cups during this stretch, including three consecutive league crowns from 1978–79 to 1980–81.
After their sixth title in 1983–84, Trabzonspor endured a 38-year championship drought marked by close calls and rebuilding. That drought ended in the 2021–22 season, when they clinched their seventh league title under manager Abdullah Avcı. The victory triggered massive celebrations in Trabzon and reaffirmed the club's place among Turkey's elite. The team plays in claret and sky blue striped shirts and has called the Şenol Güneş Sports Complex home since 2016.
History
On August 2, 1967, four amateur clubs from Trabzon, İdmanocağı, İdmangücü, Karadenizgücü, and Martıspor, merged to form Trabzonspor. The merger wasn't smooth; an earlier attempt in June 1966 collapsed when İdmanocağı pulled out. The club's first president, Ali Osman Ulusoy, and first manager, Hayri Gür, laid the foundation. The colors claret and sky blue were chosen after five meetings to find a neutral palette acceptable to all merging sides.
Trabzonspor earned promotion to the Süper Lig by winning the Turkish Second League in 1973–74 and have never been relegated since. Under manager Ahmet Suat Özyazıcı, who led from 1973 to 1988, the club won four league titles, three Turkish Cups, and five Super Cups. The 1975–76 championship was historic: Trabzonspor became the first club outside Istanbul to win the Turkish top flight. They repeated in 1976–77, then won three straight from 1978–79 to 1980–81, and added a sixth in 1983–84.
The 38-year title drought that followed saw Trabzonspor finish as runners-up several times, most painfully in 2003–04 and 2010–11. The breakthrough came in 2021–22 under Abdullah Avcı, with a dominant campaign that yielded 81 points. The club has also won 10 Turkish Cups overall, with the most recent in 2019–20. Off the pitch, Trabzonspor's fanbase, known for its fierce loyalty, has been central to the club's identity, packing the streets of Trabzon in maroon and blue during title celebrations.
