    About

Founded by the late Lamar Hunt in 1995, this franchise launched in 1996 as one of the original charter teams for Major League Soccer. The club began its journey as the Kansas City Wiz before rebranding to the Kansas City Wizards later that same year due to trademark issues. A major transformation occurred in 2011 when the organization adopted the global Sporting brand and moved its home games from Missouri to Kansas. This shift made them the only major professional sports franchise to play home matches within the borders of Kansas.

The team currently competes in the Western Conference of MLS and has called Sporting Park home since 2011. Prior to establishing their own soccer-specific venue, the squad shared Arrowhead Stadium with the NFL's Chiefs and played at Legends Field. Recent announcements indicate plans for a new $65 million stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, though current operations remain centered at Sporting Park.

    History

Peter Vermes stands as the longest-serving head coach in MLS history, having led the club since 2009. He took over after Curt Onalfo served as interim head coach following the departure of previous managers. Under Vermes, the club secured back-to-back U.S. Open Cup titles in 2012 and 2015. The team also claimed the Supporters' Shield for the best regular-season record in 2000 and 2013. They won the MLS Cup in 2000 and the CONCACAF Champions League in 2018.

Rivalries define the club's culture, most notably the Border War against Real Salt Lake and the intense regional rivalry with St. Louis City SC. The fan base creates an intimidating environment for visiting teams, contributing significantly to the club's strong home-field advantage. Traditions like Latino Heritage Night and the introduction of SKC luchadors help engage the community and build local support.
