About
The Rutgers Scarlet Knights represent the athletic interests of Rutgers University's New Brunswick campus in New Jersey. They compete at the NCAA Division I level across a wide range of sports, though football and basketball command the most attention from fans and media alike.
History books mark November 6, 1869, as the day Rutgers secured its place in the record books by defeating the College of New Jersey (now Princeton) in the first intercollegiate football game. The final score was six runs to four, establishing a legacy that predates modern collegiate athletics by decades.
History
Rutgers spent much of the 20th century as an independent or a member of smaller conferences before joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1991. The program made headlines again in July 2014 when it left the ACC to join the Big Ten Conference, marking a major shift toward major power conference status.
Football remains the centerpiece of the athletic department. The team plays its home games at SHI Stadium on the college campus in Piscataway. While the university has explored options for a new facility, the current structure continues to host the gridiron squad. Basketball teams have utilized venues like the Louis Brown Athletic Center and the Rutgers Athletic Center depending on scheduling needs.
