Rio Ave F.C.

Rio Ave Futebol Clube, based in the coastal town of Vila do Conde, is a mainstay of Portuguese football. Named after the Ave River that flows through the region, the club competes in the Primeira Liga and plays its home games at Estádio do Rio Ave FC, known as Estádio dos Arcos. Built in 1985, the stadium holds around 5,300 fans who pack the stands in green and white, the club's traditional colors. Rio Ave has developed a reputation as a breeding ground for talent, launching the careers of Portuguese internationals like Alfredo, Paulinho Santos, Quim, Rui Jorge, and Fábio Coentrão. More recently, goalkeepers Jan Oblak and Ederson honed their skills at the club before moving to bigger stages. The team's best league finishes came in 1981–82, 2017–18, and 2019–20, when they placed fifth. They have reached the Taça de Portugal final twice, in 1984 and 2014, losing to Porto and Benfica respectively. Rio Ave was founded on January 18, 1939, by a group of local sports enthusiasts. The club spent its early decades in regional leagues before climbing to the top flight. Their first major final came in 1984, when they faced Porto in the Taça de Portugal but lost 4-1. That same season they finished fifth in the league, their best result at the time. The 2003-04 season brought silverware: Rio Ave won the Taça da Liga, beating Sporting CP in a penalty shootout. That remains the club's only major trophy.

The 2010s marked a golden era. Under Carlos Carvalhal, Rio Ave finished fifth in 2017-18 and again in 2019-20. The 2014 cup run was particularly dramatic: they knocked out Braga and Porto before falling to Benfica in the final. That run qualified them for the UEFA Europa League, where they faced Swedish side IFK Göteborg in the play-off round. Rio Ave won the first leg 1-0 at home but lost the return leg 1-0 and were eliminated on penalties. In 2023-24, the club finished 11th under coach Luís Freire, who continues to lead the squad.[edit]
