About
Real Club Celta de Vigo operates out of the coastal city of Vigo in Galicia, Spain. The club competes in La Liga and plays home matches at the Abanca Balaídos Stadium. Their sky-blue and white kits inspired the nickname Os Celestes, which honors the Celtic heritage of the region where the team was founded on August 23, 1923.
The squad has never secured a La Liga title or Copa del Rey trophy, yet they have consistently performed as a competitive force. They finished second in the league during the 1947–48 season and achieved their highest modern standing by finishing fourth in 2002–03. That campaign marked their first entry into the UEFA Champions League, where they advanced to the Round of 16 before falling to AC Milan.
History
The club emerged from the merger of Real Vigo Sporting and Real Fortuna to create a unified entity capable of competing nationally. Early decades saw the team fluctuate between the top two divisions until the late 1940s brought their first major success with a runners-up finish in 1947–48. A significant resurgence began under coach Javier Irureta in the 1990s, leading to a fifth-place finish in 1997–98 and a memorable 4–1 victory over Liverpool in the UEFA Cup.
Celta shared the UEFA Intertoto Cup with FC Porto in 2000, earning a spot in the UEFA Cup where they reached the Round of 16. The 2002–03 season stands out as a peak performance with a fourth-place league finish and a Champions League run that included a 1–0 win at Highbury against Arsenal. Following a relegation scare in 2004, the team returned to the top flight in 2005 and has remained there since. In 2016–17, Eduardo Berizzo guided the side to the Europa League semi-finals, where they lost to Manchester United.
