    About

PSV Eindhoven, officially Philips Sport Vereniging NV, is a professional football club based in Eindhoven, Netherlands. Founded on August 31, 1913, as a works team for Philips employees, the club has grown into one of the most successful sides in Dutch football. PSV competes in the Eredivisie and forms the traditional "big three" alongside Ajax and Feyenoord. The team plays at the Philips Stadion, a 35,000-seat venue built on the site where the club played its first match. Known for their red-and-white striped shirts, PSV has won 27 Eredivisie titles, 11 KNVB Cups, and a record 15 Johan Cruyff Shields. On the European stage, they lifted the UEFA Cup in 1978 and the European Cup in 1988, the latter as part of a historic treble under Guus Hiddink. The club's fanbase, proudly calling themselves "boeren" (farmers), reflects Eindhoven's provincial Brabantian identity, creating an electric atmosphere at home games.

    History

PSV's roots go back to 1911, when a group of Philips employees formed "Philips Elftal" for friendly matches. The club was officially founded two years later on August 31, 1913, as a multi-sport association. They joined the Dutch football league system and won their first national title in 1929. After World War II, PSV became a regular contender, claiming additional championships in 1951 and 1963. The 1970s marked a turning point: under coach Kees Rijvers, the club won three consecutive Eredivisie titles from 1974 to 1976, and in 1978 they captured the UEFA Cup by defeating Bastia in the final.

The greatest season in club history came in 1987–88. Guided by Guus Hiddink, PSV won the Eredivisie, the KNVB Cup, and the European Cup, beating Benfica on penalties in the final. That squad featured stars like Ruud Gullit, Ronald Koeman, and Romário. The 1990s and 2000s saw continued domestic success, with title wins in 1991, 1992, 1997, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008. PSV also reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2005, losing to AC Milan. After a brief dip, the club rebounded to win the Eredivisie in 2015, 2016, 2018, and 2024 under Peter Bosz, who clinched his first league title in his debut season.
