The Orlando Magic were born in 1989 when the NBA awarded an expansion franchise to Orlando, and they quickly made noise by landing Shaquille O'Neal with the first overall pick in 1992. A year later, a draft-day trade brought Anfernee 'Penny' Hardaway to town, and the duo's electric chemistry propelled the team to the NBA Finals in just its sixth season. That 1995 run ended with a sweep at the hands of the Houston Rockets, but it put Central Florida firmly on the basketball map.

The Magic rebuilt around Tracy McGrady in the early 2000s, and he captured two scoring titles in Orlando. Then came Dwight Howard, selected first overall in 2004, who anchored a defense that carried the team back to the Finals in 2009, where they lost to Kobe Bryant's Lakers in five games. After Howard's departure in 2012, the franchise entered a long rebuild, bottoming out before rising again behind Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner.

Throughout their history, the Magic have won two Eastern Conference titles and six division crowns. The franchise also saw David Steele, the voice of the team for all 37 seasons, retire recently, marking the end of an era.
