    About

Ask anyone in Ponta Grossa about Operário and the first word you will hear is Fantasma. The Ghost. It comes from a habit that goes back decades: this is a club that turns up at bigger grounds and refuses to behave like a visitor. Founded on 1 May 1912 by the men who built and ran the railways through the interior of Paraná, Operário is the second-oldest football club in the state, and the black-and-white shirt still carries that working-class, rail-yard identity.

The team plays at the Estádio Germano Krüger, a tight ground of roughly 10,000 that sits close enough to the pitch that opposing sides feel the crowd on their necks. Operário competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B and in the Campeonato Paranaense, and recent seasons have been spent as a settled second-tier side rather than a yo-yo club. The current squad skews veteran: 32 players with an average age of 29.4, including four foreign players and no current internationals.

The club's modern high point runs from 2018 to 2019. A runner-up finish in Série C in 2018 earned promotion, and in 2019 Operário played a single season in Série A before dropping back down. State titles have come several times, most recently in 2015. None of that makes Operário a national power, and nobody around the Germano Krüger pretends otherwise. What the club does have is a long memory, a fierce local following and a knack for making life uncomfortable for wealthier opponents.

    History

The railway arrived in Ponta Grossa in the late nineteenth century and changed the town completely. By 1912 the workers on the line had their own football club, founded on 1 May of that year, and the name Operário Ferroviário has never needed updating since. Only a handful of Paraná clubs are older. For most of the twentieth century the club lived inside the state game, building a following among rail employees and their families while the big capital clubs took the national headlines.

The modern era has been defined by two promotions. In 2018 Operário finished second in Série C, a result that lifted the club back into the national second tier after years away. The follow-up was even better: promotion to Série A for 2019, the club's only season in the Brazilian top flight, which ended in relegation but left a season of away days that supporters still talk about. Along the way the club also won the Southern Zone of the Campeonato Paranaense Second Division at one point in its history, a smaller footnote that shows how far the club has traveled.

Cup football produced its own chapter when Operário reached the quarter-finals of the Copa do Brasil and drew Flamengo, a tie the club's own media still describes as historic. Since then the team has settled into Série B, trading results with Criciúma, CRB, Botafogo-SP, Londrina, Atlético Goianiense, São Bernardo and Fortaleza. In late 2025 a 2-0 away win at Criciúma on 28 September kept faint promotion hopes alive, though by round 35 of the Série B campaign the club's own broadcasters were calling the push nearly impossible. That is the Operário rhythm: always close enough to dream, rarely far enough to coast.
