About
Oklahoma State University fields a men's basketball program that has competed at the NCAA Division I level since the 1907–08 season. The team calls Stillwater home and plays its games inside Gallagher-Iba Arena, a venue that opened in 1938 and remains one of the most difficult places for visiting teams to play. Fans fill the arena every night, often ranking among the highest in attendance figures across college basketball.
Two national titles define the program's legacy. Under head coach Henry "Hank" Iba, the squad captured back-to-back championships in 1945 and 1946. Those years launched a dynasty that includes six Final Four appearances and eleven Elite Eight runs over twenty-nine total tournament bids. The team also secured twenty-five conference championships across several leagues, including the Southwest Conference, Missouri Valley, Big Eight, and Big 12, with their latest crown arriving from the 2005 Big 12 Tournament.
Steve Lutz took over as head coach on April 1, 2024, entering his third season in charge. He follows predecessors like Mike Boynton and Brad Underwood, both of whom helped maintain the program's high standards. Recent seasons have seen active roster management through the transfer portal and international tours, such as an unbeaten run in Puerto Rico during the summer of 2026. The fan base, known as Cowboy Nation, supports the team through traditions like the Orange Power Pass system and the iconic orange and black colors.
History
The program began varsity play in the 1907–08 season and quickly established itself as a competitive force in Oklahoma. For decades, the team played in various locations before settling into Gallagher-Iba Arena in 1938. That building became the heart of the franchise, hosting countless memorable games and creating a loud environment that intimidated opponents. The arena's design and location in the center of campus ensure that student sections remain packed during every home game.
Hank Iba arrived in 1942 and transformed the school into a national powerhouse. His defensive style led the Cowboys to consecutive NCAA titles in 1945 and 1946. Players from those championship squads include future Hall of Famers who set the standard for future generations. The success continued under later coaches, with the team earning twenty-five conference championships across different leagues. They won titles in the Southwest Conference, Missouri Valley Conference, Big Eight, and Big 12, proving their ability to adapt and win regardless of the conference structure.
Modern eras have seen shifts in leadership but not in ambition. Steve Lutz joined the staff in 2024 after serving as an assistant and interim head coach. He inherited a roster built on recruiting and development, aiming to return the team to deep tournament runs. Recent schedules include foreign tours and challenging non-conference matchups designed to prepare the squad for the rigors of the Big 12. The rivalry with the Oklahoma Sooners remains a highlight of every season, drawing intense attention from fans across the state.
