Leyton Orient F.C.

Leyton Orient Football Club, often simply called Orient, is a professional club based in Leyton, East London. They compete in EFL League One, the third tier of English football. The club's roots go back to 1881 when they were formed as Glyn Cricket Club, before switching to football in 1888 under the name Orient. After early success in local leagues, they joined the London League in 1896 and became Clapton Orient in 1898. Election to the Football League followed in 1905, and the club has since experienced the full range of English football, from brief top-flight spells to a season outside the league system.

The modern era has been a rollercoaster. After decades of stability, the club fell into financial trouble under Italian owner Francesco Becchetti, suffering two relegations in three years and dropping out of the Football League in 2017. But under new ownership led by Nigel Travis, and with managers like Justin Edinburgh and Richie Wellens at the helm, they bounced back. A National League title in 2018-19 was followed by a League Two championship in 2022-23. Today, they play at Brisbane Road, their home since 1937, and are known affectionately as the O's, sporting all-red kits. [edit]

Leyton Orient's roots date to 1881, when the club began as Glyn Cricket Club before switching to football in 1888. They joined the London League in 1896 and adopted the name Clapton Orient two years later. Election to the Football League in 1905 marked the start of a long association with the professional game. The club's first major success came in 1955-56, when they won the Third Division South title under manager Alec Stock. They repeated that feat in 1969-70, capturing the Third Division championship. The 2013-14 FA Cup run remains a highlight: Orient reached the semi-finals, where they lost to Sheffield United on penalties after beating Plymouth Argyle in the quarter-finals.

Financial turmoil under Francesco Becchetti's ownership led to two relegations in three years and, in 2017, relegation from the Football League altogether. Nigel Travis's ownership group took over, and under Justin Edinburgh the club won the National League title in 2018-19. Richie Wellens then guided Orient to the League Two championship in 2022-23, securing a place in League One. The club has also experienced tragedy: Edinburgh died suddenly in 2019, months after leading the team to promotion. [edit]
