About
The Kansas City Chiefs are a professional American football team based in Kansas City, Missouri, competing in the National Football League as a member of the American Football Conference West division. Founded in 1960 as the Dallas Texans, a charter member of the rival American Football League, the franchise was the brainchild of Lamar Hunt, who also co-founded the AFL. After winning the AFL championship in 1962, the team moved to Kansas City in 1963 and became the Chiefs. They played at Municipal Stadium until 1972, when they moved to Arrowhead Stadium, a venue famous for its ear-splitting crowd noise and intimidating atmosphere.
The Chiefs captured their first Super Bowl title in Super Bowl IV, defeating the Minnesota Vikings 23-7. That victory capped a dominant AFL era, but a 50-year championship drought followed. The drought ended spectacularly under head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes, with the team winning Super Bowl LIV, Super Bowl LVII, and Super Bowl LVIII in a four-season span. Mahomes, a two-time NFL MVP, and tight end Travis Kelce have become the faces of a modern dynasty that has reached five of the last six Super Bowls.
Chiefs fans, known as the Sea of Red, fill Arrowhead Stadium with a fervor that has set Guinness World Records for loudest crowd roar. Traditions like the Tomahawk Chop and the pre-game drum ceremony are central to game-day culture. The team is owned by the Hunt family, with Clark Hunt serving as chairman and CEO. With a rich AFL heritage and three Super Bowl wins in the 2020s, the Chiefs have firmly established themselves as one of the NFL's premier organizations.
History
The franchise began in 1960 as the Dallas Texans, one of eight original AFL teams. Owner Lamar Hunt, who coined the term Super Bowl, saw his team win the AFL championship in 1962 after a 20-17 double-overtime victory over the Houston Oilers, then the longest pro football game ever played. Despite that success, the Dallas market proved tough, so Hunt moved the team to Kansas City in 1963, renaming them the Chiefs after a fan contest. Under head coach Hank Stram, the Chiefs became an AFL powerhouse, winning league titles in 1966 and 1969. The 1969 championship set up Super Bowl IV, where the Chiefs stunned the heavily favored Minnesota Vikings 23-7, with quarterback Len Dawson earning MVP honors.
After the AFL-NFL merger, the Chiefs struggled to replicate that success. They made the playoffs sporadically in the 1970s and 1980s, with standout players like linebacker Bobby Bell, defensive tackle Buck Buchanan, and kicker Jan Stenerud earning Hall of Fame honors. The 1990s brought more consistent contention under coaches Marty Schottenheimer and Dick Vermeil, but playoff disappointments mounted. The team's offense in the early 2000s, led by running back Priest Holmes and tight end Tony Gonzalez, set records but couldn't push past the first round.
The franchise's fortunes changed dramatically in 2013 with the hiring of Andy Reid. Reid's steady hand and offensive genius, combined with the drafting of Patrick Mahomes in 2017, launched a golden era. The Chiefs won their first Super Bowl in 50 years in Super Bowl LIV, rallying from a 10-point deficit to beat the San Francisco 49ers. They followed with victories in Super Bowl LVII over the Philadelphia Eagles and Super Bowl LVIII over the 49ers again. Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and defensive star Chris Jones have been the core of a team that has won eight straight AFC West titles and appeared in five of the last six Super Bowls.
