Iowa Wolves

The Iowa Wolves are a professional basketball team based in Des Moines, Iowa, competing in the NBA G League as the minor league affiliate of the Minnesota Timberwolves. They play their home games at Casey's Center, a venue that opened in 2005 with a seating capacity of approximately 15,181. The franchise was originally founded in 2007 as the Iowa Energy in the NBA Development League and was rebranded in 2017 after the Timberwolves purchased the team, aligning the name and colors with the parent club.

The Wolves compete in the Western Conference of the NBA G League. Their primary rivalry is with the Sioux Falls Skyforce, the G League affiliate of the Miami Heat, due to geographic proximity and frequent playoff matchups. Fan culture is characterized by strong community support and family-friendly game-day experiences, including traditions like Wolves Wednesdays, discounted ticket promotions, and post-game autograph sessions with players. The franchise began in 2007 as the Iowa Energy, an expansion team in the NBA Development League. In their first season, the Energy drew 8,842 fans for their home opener, setting a D-League attendance record. The team reached the playoffs in 2008 and 2009 but fell short of the finals. Under head coach Nick Nurse, the Energy captured the D-League championship in 2011, defeating the Rio Grande Valley Vipers two games to one. Game 2 of that series drew 14,036 spectators, another attendance record. Nurse left after the 2011 season to join the NBA coaching ranks, later winning an NBA title with the Toronto Raptors in 2019. The Energy made additional playoff appearances in 2012, 2014, and 2015 but did not return to the finals.

In 2017, the Minnesota Timberwolves purchased the franchise and rebranded it as the Iowa Wolves, adopting the Timberwolves' colors and name. The Wolves reached the Western Conference Finals in 2019 but lost to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. In the 2023–24 season, the team finished 20–14, securing the No. 4 seed, but lost in the first round of the playoffs. The 2024–25 season saw a 15–19 record, missing the playoffs entirely. The franchise has consistently developed talent for its parent club, with numerous Timberwolves draft picks and two-way players spending time in Des Moines.[edit]
