    About

Girona Futbol Club, S.A.D. is a professional football club based in the Catalan city of Girona, founded on 23 July 1930. The club has spent most of its history in Spain's lower divisions, but a transformative partnership with the City Football Group, the global network that includes Manchester City, changed its trajectory. That connection brought resources and expertise, helping Girona secure its first-ever promotion to La Liga in 2017. Their debut season in the top flight saw them finish a respectable 10th, and they reached the semifinals of the Copa del Rey that same year. Though they were relegated in 2019, they bounced back in 2022 and then stunned Spanish football by finishing third in 2023–24, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the first time in club history.

Their home ground, Estadi Montilivi, holds 14,624 spectators and often feels like a fortress, with the passionate local crowd pushing the team beyond expectations. The fanbase rallies around the slogan #OrgullGironí (Girona Pride), and the atmosphere at Montilivi has been a key factor in the club's recent successes. Despite the fairy-tale European adventure, the 2025–26 season proved harsh, with relegation back to the Segunda División confirmed. Still, with City Football Group's backing and a devoted following, Girona is already planning its return. This is a team that has learned to rise from setbacks, and their journey continues to captivate followers of Spanish football.

    History

Girona FC was founded on 23 July 1930, and for decades the club toiled in the regional leagues and Segunda División B. The turning point came in 2017 when, under the guidance of coach Pablo Machín, the team earned promotion to La Liga for the first time. That debut season was a revelation: they finished 10th and reached the Copa del Rey semifinals, knocking out the likes of Atlético Madrid along the way. Relegation followed in 2019, but the club regrouped and returned to the top flight in 2022.

The 2023–24 campaign was nothing short of magical. Under Míchel's attacking philosophy, Girona played some of the most entertaining football in Spain, finishing third and securing a spot in the Champions League. Their European debut was a dream come true for the fans, even if the group stage proved challenging. However, the 2025–26 season ended in disappointment, with relegation back to the Segunda División. The club is now focused on rebuilding, with veteran defender David López staying on to provide leadership, and a pre-season friendly against Arsenal in August 2026, which ended 1–4, offering a glimpse of the squad's potential.
