Getafe Club de Fútbol, S.A.D., commonly known as Getafe CF, is a Spanish professional football club based in Getafe, a working-class city just south of Madrid. Since its founding in 1983, the club has carved out a distinct identity in Spanish football, known for its gritty, defensive style and its ability to punch above its weight. Getafe currently competes in La Liga, the top flight of Spanish football, and plays its home games at the Estadio Coliseum, a compact 16,800-seat stadium that has been their fortress since 1998.

The club's rise has been steady rather than meteoric. After years in the lower divisions, Getafe first reached La Liga in 2004, a milestone that transformed the club's fortunes. Getafe CF was founded in 1983, a relatively late start compared to most Spanish clubs, but the club quickly made up for lost time. They spent their early years climbing through the regional leagues, and by 1994 they had reached the Segunda División B. A key moment came in 1998 when they moved into the Estadio Coliseum, a stadium that would become synonymous with their rise. Promotion to the Segunda División followed in 2002, and just two years later, under coach Quique Sánchez Flores, Getafe achieved a historic first promotion to La Liga after a playoff victory over Tenerife.

Their debut top-flight season in 2004-05 was a struggle, but they survived, finishing 13th. The club then established itself as a stubborn mid-table presence. The late 2000s brought the most glorious era in Getafe's history. In 2007, they reached the Copa del Rey final for the first time, losing to Sevilla. The following year they repeated the feat, this time falling to Valencia in a dramatic final that went to penalties. That same 2007-08 season, Getafe made headlines across Europe with a stunning run in the UEFA Cup. They knocked out Benfica and reached the quarter-finals, where they faced Bayern Munich. After a 1-1 draw in Germany, Getafe led 3-1 in the second leg at the Coliseum, only for Bayern to score twice in injury time, including a last-gasp equalizer, and then win in extra time. After twelve straight seasons in La Liga, Getafe were relegated in 2016. But true to their character, they bounced back immediately, winning promotion in 2017 via the playoffs. Since then, they have become a regular feature in the top flight, with José Bordalás leading them to a fifth-place finish in 2018-19 and a return to European competition. Bordalás's high-intensity, defensively organized style became the club's trademark, and he remains a beloved figure at the Coliseum.
