Football Club Utrecht emerged on July 1, 1970, when three local clubs, VV DOS, USV Elinkwijk, and Velox, merged to form a single professional entity. This union created a club that operates independently from the traditional "Big Three" of Dutch football: Ajax, PSV, and Feyenoord. The team plays its home matches at Stadion Galgenwaard, a venue situated directly beside the medieval city walls of Utrecht.

The club secured its most significant trophy in 1996 by winning the KNVB Cup after defeating Ajax in the final. They returned to the cup final in 2014 but fell short against Ajax once more. Despite never capturing an Eredivisie title, FC Utrecht has maintained a consistent presence in the top flight for decades, often competing for European qualification spots.

Recent seasons have seen the squad bolstered by international talent, including a Norwegian winger arriving from Lille ahead of the 2026-2027 campaign. The team demonstrated resilience in high-profile fixtures during the 2025-2026 season, securing a dramatic 2-1 away victory against Ajax in May 2026 and a 2-0 win over AZ Alkmaar in March of the same year.
