Denver Nuggets

The Denver Nuggets are an American professional basketball team based in Denver, Colorado, competing in the National Basketball Association as a member of the Western Conference. Founded in 1967 as a charter member of the American Basketball Association, the franchise originally played as the Denver Rockets before rebranding to the Nuggets in 1974. Following the ABA–NBA merger in 1976, the Nuggets joined the NBA and have remained a Western Conference team ever since. The team plays its home games at Ball Arena, a venue shared with the Colorado Avalanche of the National Hockey League, and is known for the distinct home-court advantage provided by Denver's high altitude of 5,280 feet above sea level.

The Nuggets captured their first NBA championship in 2023, defeating the Miami Heat 4–1 in the NBA Finals. The title came after years of competitive playoff appearances but no previous NBA Finals berths in the franchise's NBA history. The team had reached the ABA Finals in 1976, losing to the New York Nets. In the NBA era, the Nuggets have won 12 division titles and made the playoffs in 28 seasons, including a streak of 10 consecutive postseason appearances from 2004 to 2013. The 2023 championship was led by two-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokić, who averaged 30.2 points, 13.9 rebounds, and 10.1 assists in the playoffs, earning Finals MVP honors.

Fan culture is deeply tied to the Mile High City identity, with traditions including the Rocky mascot, a mountain lion, and the Nuggets Dance Team. The team's 2023 championship parade drew an estimated 750,000 fans. The Denver Nuggets were founded in 1967 as the Denver Rockets, a charter franchise of the American Basketball Association. The team played its first seven seasons at the Denver Auditorium Arena before moving to the Denver Coliseum in 1975. In 1974, the franchise rebranded to the Denver Nuggets, a name that had been used by a previous Denver team in the 1949–50 NBA season. The Nuggets were one of four ABA teams absorbed into the NBA via the 1976 merger, joining the San Antonio Spurs, Indiana Pacers, and New York Nets.

In the early NBA years, the Nuggets were known for a fast-paced offense under coach Doug Moe, who led the team to nine straight playoff appearances from 1982 to 1990. The 1984–85 squad set an NBA record for highest points per game in a season (126.5), a mark that still stands. Despite regular-season success, the team advanced past the second round only once in that era, reaching the Western Conference Finals in 1985, where they lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in five games. The 1990s brought a defensive identity led by Dikembe Mutombo, whose finger-wag after blocks became iconic. The 1993–94 team, seeded eighth, stunned the top-seeded Seattle SuperSonics in the first round, a classic upset.

The 2000s saw the emergence of Carmelo Anthony, drafted third overall in 2003, who led the Nuggets to the playoffs every year from 2004 to 2010. The team reached the Western Conference Finals in 2009 under coach George Karl, losing to the Lakers in six games. After Anthony's departure in 2011, the Nuggets remained competitive with a deep roster but failed to advance past the first round. The franchise underwent a rebuild after 2013, bottoming out in 2015–16 with a 33–49 record. The drafting of Nikola Jokić in the second round of the 2014 draft (41st overall) proved transformative.
