Clube do Remo

Clube do Remo, founded on 5 February 1905 in Belém, Pará, is one of the oldest football clubs in northern Brazil. Its name derives from rowing (remo in Portuguese), the sport that gave the club its start, but football soon became its primary focus. The team is known as the Leão Azul (Blue Lion), a nickname that reflects the lion on its crest and its blue-and-white colors. Remo plays its home matches at the Estádio Olímpico do Pará, commonly called Mangueirão, a 45,000-seat venue known for generating an intense atmosphere. The club also uses the smaller Baenão for training and some matches. Remo currently competes in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série B and the Campeonato Paraense, the state league of Pará. Its fiercest rival is Paysandu, with whom it contests the Clássico Rei (King's Derby), one of Brazil's most passionate regional derbies. The club's fanbase, the Fiel Azul, is known for elaborate choreographed displays and a deep connection to the club's history.[edit]

The club began as a rowing association in 1905, but within a few years its members had formed a football team. Remo won its first Campeonato Paraense in 1913 and went on to dominate the state league, accumulating 47 titles by 2024. The club first reached the national stage in the 1970s, competing in the Campeonato Brasileiro Série A. Its best finish in the top flight came in 1993, when it placed fifth. Remo won the Série B in its inaugural season of 1971 and later added a Série C title in 2005, the same year it last played in Série A. Financial difficulties in the 2010s saw the club drop to Série D, but a resurgence began in the 2020s. Under coach Guto Ferreira, Remo won the Copa Verde in 2021 and 2024, and the Campeonato Paraense in 2023 and 2024, including a double over rival Paysandu in the 2024 finals. The club also reached the quarterfinals of the Copa CONMEBOL in 1992.[edit]
