    About

Major League Soccer welcomed its 28th franchise in Charlotte, North Carolina, when billionaire David Tepper secured expansion rights on December 17, 2019. The owner of the NFL's Carolina Panthers brought a new level of ambition to the city, transforming it into a dedicated soccer hub under Tepper Sports & Entertainment. The club kicked off play in the 2022 season, immediately establishing itself as a major player in the Eastern Conference.

Playing home games at Bank of America Stadium creates a unique dynamic for the team. While the venue holds over 74,000 fans for football, the setup shifts to approximately 38,000 seats for soccer matches. This configuration brings the crowd closer to the pitch, generating a raucous atmosphere that has drawn record-breaking attendance since day one. The fan base, led by the Mint City Collective, fills the stands with drums and tifo displays, making every home match feel like a local event.

    History

The inaugural campaign began on February 26, 2022, with a 3-0 defeat against D.C. United. Despite that start, the home opener against the LA Galaxy drew over 74,000 spectators, signaling immediate community support. First head coach Miguel Ángel Ramírez left the position in May 2022, leading Christian Lattanzio to take the helm as interim before becoming permanent coach. Under Lattanzio, the team reached the playoffs in 2023 but fell to the New York Red Bulls in the first round.

Dean Smith arrived in 2024 to bring structure to the squad after his tenure at Aston Villa. By September 2026, he had earned his 50th victory as the club's manager. The roster has seen significant movement, including the departure of first designated player Karol Świderski in 2024 and the loan arrival of German midfielder Julian Brandt from Borussia Dortmund. Forward Kerwin Vargas moved to Brazilian side Athletico Paranaense in August 2026, while defender Andrew Privett has become a staple of the young defensive core.

Recent seasons have featured dramatic moments and tough losses. A 1-0 defeat to Chicago Fire FC in late September 2026 ended an unbeaten streak, highlighted by a red card for veteran defender Tim Ream. That same month, the team secured a dramatic 3-3 draw against FC Cincinnati to extend their run earlier in the week. Allan Saint-Maximin added flair to the attack during 2026, while Ream announced his retirement from international duty shortly after the Chicago loss.
