CD Leganés

Club Deportivo Leganés, a professional football club from the city of Leganés in the Community of Madrid, competes in Spain's Segunda División. Founded on June 23, 1928, the club began its journey in the sixth tier of Spanish football. Over the decades, Leganés climbed the ranks, earning a reputation as a resilient and determined side. Their home ground, the Estadio Municipal Butarque, opened in 1998, replacing the smaller Luis Rodríguez de Miguel stadium where they had played since 1966. Butarque seats 14,500 spectators and has witnessed the club's most memorable moments, including their first-ever promotion to La Liga in 2016. Leganés is known for its strong community ties and a blue-collar ethos that resonates with its fanbase. Though they lack the financial muscle of Spain's giants, the club has consistently punched above its weight, often defying expectations. Félix Pérez de la Serna officially founded Club Deportivo Leganés on June 23, 1928, continuing the project of the former C.D. Once Leones. The first president was Ramón del Hierro, and the original kit featured azulgrana shirts with white pants. The club spent its early decades in the lower divisions, playing at Campo de Tiro (1928-1929) and Campo del Paseo de La Estación (1929-1966) before settling at Estadio Luis Rodríguez de Miguel from 1966 to 1998.

The turning point came on June 22, 2014, when Leganés secured promotion to Segunda División for the first time, defeating L'Hospitalet with a memorable bicycle kick goal by Carlos Álvarez at La Feixa Llarga Stadium. Eleven busloads of fans traveled to support the team, while thousands more watched via giant screen at Plaza Mayor in the city center. Under manager Asier Garitano, the club then achieved a historic first promotion to La Liga on June 4, 2016, with Pablo Insua scoring the decisive goal from a corner kick on the final matchday at Miranda de Ebro.

Leganés spent four consecutive seasons in the top flight from 2016 to 2020, establishing themselves as a competitive side. After relegation, they regrouped and won the Segunda División title in the 2023-24 season under Borja Jiménez, with 74 points and a +29 goal differential. They returned to La Liga for the 2024-25 campaign but were relegated on the final matchday despite winning three of their final four games.
