    About

Affectionately known as the U's, Cambridge United has called the Abbey Stadium home since 1932. The club traces its roots back to 1912 when it formed as Abbey United before officially adopting its current name in 1951. They transitioned from local amateur leagues to the Southern League, setting the stage for a professional career that would see them climb through the English football pyramid.

Bill Leivers guided the team to consecutive Southern League titles in 1968–69 and 1969–70, securing their election into the Football League in 1970. The club enjoyed a period of ascent in the 1970s, winning promotion from the Fourth Division in both 1973 and 1977, which allowed them to spend six seasons in the Second Division. John Beck later revitalized the squad in the early 1990s with a Third Division title and playoff success, though the team faced relegation to the Conference National in 2005 after nine years in non-league football.

After three failed promotion attempts, Cambridge United returned to the Football League in 2014 via a play-off victory. Mark Bonner steered the club to a runners-up finish in League Two in 2021, earning promotion back to League One. Neil Harris currently manages the side, continuing a tradition of developing young talent while maintaining deep community ties through the Cambridge United Community Trust.

    History

The club began life as Abbey United in 1912 and played at various grounds before settling at the Cambs County Ground in 1932, which they renamed the Abbey Stadium. A major turning point arrived under manager Bill Leivers, who led the team to back-to-back Southern League championships in 1968–69 and 1969–70. These victories earned the club election into the Football League in 1970, marking the start of their professional era.

Cambridge United quickly rose through the divisions, securing promotion from the Fourth Division in 1973 and again in 1977. They spent six consecutive seasons in the Second Division before facing relegation. The early 1990s saw a resurgence under John Beck, who won the Third Division title and a play-off final, but the team eventually dropped into the Conference National in 2005. After nine years away from the Football League, including three unsuccessful play-off campaigns, they secured promotion in 2014. More recently, the club finished as runners-up in League Two in 2021 under Mark Bonner to return to the third tier.
