The town of Burton upon Trent is famous for its water and its beer, a combination that birthed Burton Albion Football Club in 1950. The team carries the name The Brewers to honor the local malting industry that defined the community for generations. For decades the club operated in the non-league system, grinding through lower tiers before finally earning a permanent place in the English Football League.

Burton Albion's rise remains one of the most impressive modern success stories for a small-town outfit. They secured promotion to the National League in 2008 and followed it with a record-breaking points tally in League Two the very next year. The squad climbed steadily through the divisions, reaching the Championship in 2017 after defeating Bristol Rovers in the play-offs.

Currently competing in Sky Bet League One as of the 2026–27 season, the club has spent nine consecutive years in the third tier since their relegation from the second division. The club emerged from the ashes of Burton Town, which dissolved in 1950 due to financial troubles. The new entity adopted the nickname The Brewers immediately to reflect the town's identity. After spending many years in the Northern Premier League and other regional circuits, the team broke into the Football Conference in 2008. That same year they set a league record by winning the National League title with 103 points.

Success continued rapidly as they moved up to League Two in 2009. A decade later, they achieved their highest ever finish by reaching the EFL Championship in 2017. Although they were relegated back to League One shortly after, the climb from obscurity to the second tier stands as a testament to their organizational strength.
