About
Burnley Football Club traces its roots to 1882 in the Lancashire town of Burnley. They turned professional in 1883, a move that pressured the Football Association to formally regulate player payments. As a founding member of the Football League in 1888, the club stands as one of the oldest institutions in English football history.
The team plays at Turf Moor, which has been their home ground since 1883. This venue is the second-oldest still in use for top-flight English football after Bramall Lane. Their traditional kit features claret shirts with blue sleeves and white shorts, earning them the nickname "The Clarets." The squad currently competes in the EFL Championship after relegation from the Premier League following the 2025–26 season.
History
Burnley secured two FA Cup victories in 1914 and 1962. Their league titles came during the 1920–21 and 1959–60 seasons. The 1960 championship remains significant as the last time an English club outside the top flight won the league before the Premier League era began.
Recent years saw Sean Dyche lead the team to promotion in 2023 and survival until their 2025–26 relegation. The 2026–27 campaign has been difficult, with losses against Wolverhampton Wanderers on October 16 and Charlton Athletic on October 13 sparking fan discontent. An agent linked to the club faced FA charges for alleged misconduct in mid-October 2026.
Legendary players include Tommy Lawton and Denis Law, who started his career there before moving to Manchester United. Brian Labone, John Connelly, and Kevin Beattie became iconic figures in later decades. The academy system has also produced talents like Jack Rodwell and Ashley Young.
