    About

Beşiktaş Jimnastik Kulübü, founded on March 3, 1903 in Istanbul's Beşiktaş district, is Turkey's oldest registered sports club. The football team has been a permanent fixture in the Süper Lig since its inception, never suffering relegation. Known as the Black Eagles, the club boasts 21 league championships, including 16 Süper Lig titles, with the most recent coming in 2020-21. They also won the Turkish Cup in 2023-24, their 11th such triumph. Beşiktaş is one of only a handful of clubs worldwide authorized to fly the Turkish flag on its crest, a privilege granted for its role in the Turkish War of Independence.

The team plays at Beşiktaş Stadium, also called Vodafone Park, a 42,684-capacity venue opened in 2016 on the shores of the Bosphorus, adjacent to Dolmabahçe Palace. Its predecessor, BJK İnönü Stadium, stood for 66 years and witnessed countless historic moments. During construction between 2013 and 2016, Beşiktaş played at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium and Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium. The current stadium houses Turkey's largest sports museum, the Beşiktaş Museum.

Beşiktaş's fan culture is legendary, led by the ultra group Çarşı, known for its left-leaning, working-class ethos and fierce loyalty. In a 2007 Champions League match against Liverpool, the fans set a Guinness World Record for loudest stadium roar at 132 decibels. The club also holds the Turkish league attendance record of 76,127, set during a derby against Galatasaray. Beşiktaş's European exploits include reaching the European Cup quarter-finals in 1986-87 and becoming the first Turkish club to advance from the Champions League group stage undefeated in 2017-18, finishing with 14 points.

    History

Beşiktaş was founded as Bereket Jimnastik Kulübü in 1903 by a group of young Turkish men during the Ottoman era, becoming Beşiktaş Jimnastik Kulübü in 1911. The football branch started in 1911 and quickly became a dominant force in Istanbul football. The club won its first national championship in 1957, the Turkish Football Championship, and was a founding member of the Süper Lig in 1959.

The 1990s were a golden era. Under coach Gordon Milne, Beşiktaş won three consecutive league titles from 1990 to 1992. The 1991-92 season was historic: Beşiktaş went undefeated in the league, a feat no other Turkish club has matched. Striker Feyyaz Uçar and midfielder Rıza Çalımbay, who holds the record for most appearances with 538, were key figures. In 1994, German coach Christoph Daum arrived, leading Beşiktaş to the 1994-95 league title with a record 98 goals scored.

The 2000s brought mixed fortunes. Beşiktaş won league titles in 2002-03 under Mircea Lucescu and 2008-09 under Mustafa Denizli. The club also reached the Champions League group stage multiple times. In 2013, BJK İnönü Stadium was demolished, and Beşiktaş played three seasons at temporary homes. The new Vodafone Park opened in 2016, and under Şenol Güneş, Beşiktaş won back-to-back Süper Lig titles in 2015-16 and 2016-17. Güneş also guided the team to an unbeaten Champions League group stage in 2017-18.

The 2020-21 season brought another league title under club legend Sergen Yalçın, who as a player had been a creative midfielder for Beşiktaş in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The club then won the Turkish Cup in 2023-24. However, the following seasons saw instability with multiple managerial changes, including brief stints by Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Ole Gunnar Solskjær. By 2025, Beşiktaş appointed Vincenzo Italiano and began a squad overhaul, releasing 10 players to rebuild for the future.
