About
The University of Arkansas stands as a powerhouse in college athletics, fielding teams known affectionately as the Razorbacks or simply the Hogs. This unique identity traces back to 1910 when students voted to replace the original Cardinals mascot. The change followed a memorable football clash against LSU where former coach Hugo Bezdek described his squad as a wild band of razorback hogs. Today, the program remains the only major U.S. sports team with a porcine nickname, distinguishing itself from other collegiate groups like the Texas A&M–Kingsville Javelinas. Currently, the university supports 19 varsity squads across 13 different sports. These teams compete at the highest level of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I, including the Football Bowl Subdivision for gridiron action. As members of the Southeastern Conference, the Razorbacks bring intense regional rivalries and high-stakes competition to the forefront of American college sports.
