    About

Four students from the Al-Attiyah family walked into a meeting room on October 21, 1969, and decided to build something that represented their community in Doha. They founded Al Sadd Sports Club in the district bearing their name, creating an organization that would eventually eclipse all local rivals. The nickname Al Zaeem, meaning The Leader, stuck early because the club quickly became the benchmark for success in Qatari sports. What started as a football team expanded into a multi-sport powerhouse with professional squads in handball, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, athletics, and swimming.

Their dominance on the pitch is measured by a staggering tally of 64 official football championships, a number no other club in the nation has approached. On the Asian stage, they broke new ground in 1989 by becoming the first Arab club to win the Asian Club Championship after beating Iraq's Al Rasheed. They returned to the summit in 2011 to claim the AFC Champions League title, which earned them a spot at the FIFA Club World Cup where they finished third. In the 2019 edition hosted in Qatar, they secured sixth place, proving their ability to compete when the tournament came home.

    History

The club emerged from a desire among four Al-Attiyah students to establish a team reflecting their identity within the Al-Sadd district of Doha. That initial vision grew rapidly into the most successful sports institution in Qatar. While the primary focus remains football, the organization now fields competitive teams across handball, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, athletics, and swimming. Their headquarters sits in Zone 55, serving as the administrative heart for these diverse sporting endeavors.

Recent years have seen significant roster shifts and high-profile international arrivals. In October 2026, the club signed former Ghanaian international Sulley Muntari on a two-season deal to bolster their midfield. They also acquired Italian defender Alessio Romagnoli from Lazio after he resolved previous contract disputes. Despite facing a 0-2 defeat against Saudi giants Al Hilal in the AFC Champions League Elite during October 2026, the squad showed resilience by securing a 3-1 victory over Al-Wakra later that month with goals from Pedro Miguel and Firmino.
