Sporting Clube de Portugal is a multi-sport club based in Lisbon, best known for its professional football team. Founded on July 1, 1906, the club is one of the Big Three in Portuguese football, alongside Benfica and Porto, and has never been relegated from the Primeira Liga. Sporting's home matches are played at Estádio José Alvalade, a 50,095-seat stadium built in 2003 that replaced the original 1956 venue. With over 179,000 members, Sporting is the second-largest sports club in Portugal by membership and one of the largest in the world.

The club's youth academy is world-renowned, producing legends like Luís Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo. The current squad features Swedish striker Viktor Gyökeres, instrumental in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 title-winning campaigns. Head coach Rui Borges, appointed in December 2024, has maintained momentum built under Rúben Amorim, who ended a 19-year league title drought in 2020-21.

Domestically, Sporting has won 21 Primeira Liga titles, 18 Taças de Portugal, 4 Taças da Liga, and 9 Supertaças Cândido de Oliveira. In Europe, the club won the 1963-64 European Cup Winners' Cup and was runner-up in the 2005 UEFA Cup. Sporting holds the record for most appearances in the UEFA Europa League (36 editions). The club's origins date back to 1902, but the decisive split occurred in April 1906 when José Alvalade, backed by his grandfather Alfredo Holtreman, led 17 others to form a competitive sports club. The name Sporting Clube de Portugal was adopted on July 1, 1906, replacing the temporary Campo Grande Sporting Club. The first ground, Sítio das Mouras, opened in 1907 and was considered one of the most modern sporting sites in Portugal at the time. The first titles came in 1912, when Sporting won the Lisbon championships in the 4th tier, winning 21 out of 22 games.

Sporting dominated the 1940s with five league titles, powered by the legendary Five Violins quintet featuring Fernando Peyroteo, José Travassos, Albano Pereira, Jesus Correia, and Manuel Vasques. Between 1947 and 1954, Sporting claimed seven out of eight league titles. The club's first European trophy came in 1964, defeating MTK Budapest 1-0 in the European Cup Winners' Cup final. In 2003, the new Estádio José Alvalade opened with a friendly against Manchester United, a match that famously brought Cristiano Ronaldo to Sir Alex Ferguson's attention. The stadium hosted five matches during Euro 2004 and the 2005 UEFA Cup final, where Sporting lost 3-1 to CSKA Moscow on home soil. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it hosted the quarter-finals and semi-finals of the 2019-20 UEFA Champions League as a neutral venue.

The 2020-21 season was historic: under Rúben Amorim, Sporting ended a 19-year league title drought with a record 32-match unbeaten streak, losing only once all season. The club set a new scoring record of 96 league goals in the 2023-24 campaign and successfully defended the title in 2024-25, also winning the Taça de Portugal with a 3-1 victory over Benfica in the final.
