The character first emerged in the pages of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 in May 1984, created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman. In the original Mirage comics continuity, Splinter began as a pet rat owned by Hamato Yoshi, a human ninja living in New York City. When mutagenic ooze spilled from a canister, it mutated both Yoshi into a giant humanoid rat and his pet into an intelligent being capable of speech. The rat took on the name Splinter and adopted the persona of Yoshi to protect the turtles who would later be born from the same accident.

Later adaptations introduced a different origin story that has become equally popular with fans. In this version, the character was originally Hamato Yoshi, a skilled ninja from Japan who trained under the master Saki.
