Neurosis dropped Sovereign on March 27, 2001, right after finishing their album Times of Grace. The band wanted to keep the momentum going without waiting for a full LP cycle. They booked time at Electric Audio in Chicago and handed the controls to Steve Albini. His engineering style gave the tracks that raw, unpolished texture fans have come to expect from this era of the group.
This release wasn't just about audio. The original CD came with an interactive CD-ROM component designed to match the intensity of their live shows. It included visuals and music pieces tied to their Tribes of Neurot artistic direction. In 2011, the label reissued the project and added "Misgiven" to the tracklist for long-time collectors.
