On November 21, 1885, a group of boys from St Mary's Church in the Old Town of Southampton formed the St Mary's Young Men's Association. This modest beginning evolved into one of England's oldest professional football clubs, adopting red and white stripes that have defined their visual identity for over a century. The team currently plays in the EFL Championship after finishing the 2024–25 Premier League season in a position that led to relegation in April 2025.

The club moved from their historic home, The Dell, to the purpose-built St Mary's Stadium in 2001. Located in the Freemantle district, the ground holds approximately 32,384 spectators. Southampton spent decades establishing themselves as a staple of English football, reaching the FA Cup Final in 1976 where they fell to Manchester United. Despite this achievement, the club faced significant instability in the modern era, marked by a rapid succession of managers including Ralph Hasenhüttl, Mauricio Pochettino, Nathan Jones, Rubén Sellés, Russell Martin, Simon Rusk, Ivan Jurić, Will Still, and finally Tonda Eckert. This managerial churn reflected broader struggles on the pitch that culminated in their departure from the Premier League in April 2025.

The rivalry with Portsmouth F.C., known as the South Coast Derby, remains the most intense fixture in the region. Born from the proximity of two maritime cities, this clash draws fierce local support. In the 2026–27 season, the squad finalized its numbers in mid-August and began their campaign with a loss away at Watford.
