    Overview

Boots Riley's directorial debut, Sorry to Bother You, is a wild, satirical sci-fi comedy set in an alternate Oakland. The film follows Cassius Green (LaKeith Stanfield), a struggling telemarketer who discovers that using his "white voice" unlocks career success. Tessa Thompson co-stars as Detroit, his activist girlfriend, with Jermaine Fowler, Omari Hardwick, and Terry Crews rounding out the cast. Produced on a modest $3.2 million budget, the film grossed over $18 million worldwide, earning strong reviews for its bold, surreal critique of capitalism and race. Riley, also a musician and activist, infuses the movie with a punk-rock energy that defies easy categorization.

The film premiered at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, where it won a Special Jury Award for Vision and Craft. Its soundtrack, composed by Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs and Boots Riley, blends funk, hip-hop, and experimental electronics. The visual style mixes practical effects and CGI, notably in the Equisapien horse-men, which were created using prosthetic headpieces and stilts. Riley spent over a decade developing the script, originally conceived as a novel, and cast David Cross as the uncredited voice of Cash's "white voice."

    PlotSpoiler-free

Cassius Green lives in his uncle's garage in Oakland, desperate for cash. He lands a job at RegalView, a telemarketing firm, but flounders until veteran coworker Langston reveals the secret: use a generic, friendly "white voice" that makes clients comfortable. Cash adopts this voice, his sales skyrocket, and he quickly rises through the ranks.

His success strains his relationship with Detroit, a politically conscious artist who protests corporate exploitation with the group Left Eye. Meanwhile, Cash's best friend Salvador joins a unionization effort led by Squeeze. Cash is promoted to the secretive top floor, where he meets Steve Lift, the charismatic CEO of WorryFree, a company that offers voluntary slavery with food and shelter. Lift invites Cash to a bizarre party at his mansion, where Cash discovers WorryFree's plan to create Equisapiens, half-human, half-horse hybrids designed as compliant workers. Cash must decide whether to join Lift's exploitation or resist with the workers and activists.
