Sorbonne University
France"A historic French research university spanning the arts, sciences, and medicine"
About
Sorbonne University, known in French as Sorbonne Université, stands as one of Europe's most storied institutions of higher learning. Its roots stretch back to 1257, when Robert de Sorbon founded the College of Sorbonne as part of the University of Paris, among the first universities on the continent. Today's Sorbonne University came into being in 2018, merging two of Paris's leading institutions: Paris-Sorbonne University (Paris IV), with its strength in the humanities, and the Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris VI), a powerhouse in science and medicine. This union created a comprehensive public research university that spans the arts, sciences, and engineering, all under one historic name.
The university's main campus sits in the Latin Quarter, a neighborhood that has been synonymous with intellectual life for centuries. Its buildings, including the iconic Sorbonne chapel and the grand amphitheaters, are landmarks in their own right. With over 55,000 students, including a significant international population, Sorbonne University is a major player in global academia. It consistently ranks among the top universities in France and Europe, with particular prestige in mathematics, physics, and philosophy. The merger was a strategic move to compete internationally, combining centuries of scholarly tradition with modern research capabilities. While not a film or television production, Sorbonne University has a cultural presence that rivals any blockbuster, appearing in countless movies and novels as the quintessential image of Parisian academia.
Mission
Sorbonne University's mission is to advance knowledge and foster innovation across the humanities, sciences, and medicine. It aims to provide world-class education and research that addresses global challenges, while preserving the intellectual heritage of the Sorbonne name. The university is committed to international collaboration, interdisciplinary study, and the training of future leaders in academia, industry, and public life.
History
The story of Sorbonne University begins in the thirteenth century. In 1257, Robert de Sorbon, chaplain to King Louis IX, founded the College of Sorbonne in Paris. It was a theological college that grew into a central part of the University of Paris, which itself dates to around 1150. Over the centuries, the Sorbonne became a byword for scholarly excellence, particularly in philosophy and theology.
The modern institution took shape in 1968, when the old University of Paris was split into thirteen autonomous universities. Two of these, Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV) and Pierre and Marie Curie University (Paris VI), were the direct predecessors of today's Sorbonne University. Paris-Sorbonne was known for its humanities programs, while Pierre and Marie Curie University was a leading science and medical institution. In 2018, these two merged, along with a small part of the University of Paris, to form Sorbonne University. The new entity combined their strengths under a name that resonates with centuries of academic tradition.
Since the merger, Sorbonne University has expanded its international footprint. In 2021, it signed a framework agreement with Sèmè City in Benin, opening a new chapter in African partnerships. The university has also strengthened its presence in the Middle East through Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, which celebrated two decades of Franco-Emirati cooperation in 2026. These moves reflect a strategy of global engagement while maintaining deep roots in Paris.
