Taylor Swift dropped "You Need to Calm Down" on June 14, 2019, as the second single from her seventh album Lover. Co-written and co-produced with Joel Little, the track is a bright, midtempo electropop and synth-pop number built on steady synth beats and an ascending echo refrain that gets stuck in your head fast. Lyrically, it takes direct aim at internet trolls and homophobes, with Swift throwing in the clever punchline "Why are you mad when you could be GLAAD?", a nod to the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation.
