Super Bass

Nicki Minaj burst onto the global stage with a sound that felt both retro and entirely new. Super Bass, released in April 2011 as the fifth single from her debut album Pink Friday, became the track that defined her early career. The song blends pop rap with electronic beats, featuring lyrics about a playful romance written by Minaj alongside Ester Dean, Roahn Hylton, Kane Beatz, and JMIKE. Its accompanying music video, directed by Sanaa Hamri, showcased the artist taunting a group of men while surrounded by bubblegum pink props, cementing her visual identity as much as her voice did.

Commercial success followed immediately. The track climbed to number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 and reached the top ten in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK. By December 2014, it had sold over five million digital downloads in the United States alone. The Recording Industry Association of America eventually certified it Diamond for selling ten million equivalent units. Critics praised its infectious energy, placing it on lists like Billboard's "100 Songs That Defined the Decade" and Rolling Stone's "500 Best Songs of All Time." [edit]
