About This Song
BTS released "Spring Day" on February 13, 2017, as the lead single from You Never Walk Alone, a repackage of their second studio album Wings. The song marked a departure from the hip-hop heavy sound of their earlier work, leaning into an alternative hip-hop and pop-rock power ballad style with Brit rock influences. Built on a warm, layered instrumental foundation with a prominent piano riff and swelling harmonies, it showcases the vocal range of all seven members, RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, blending their voices into a gradually intensifying arrangement.
The lyrics, written by "Hitman" Bang, RM, Adora, Arlissa Ruppert, Peter Ibsen, and Suga, explore themes of loss, longing, and the slow passage of time. The song is widely interpreted as a tribute to the victims of the Sewol ferry disaster, in which 304 people, mostly high school students, died in April 2014. BTS member Jin confirmed in a 2021 Esquire interview that the song addresses "a sad event" and carries personal meaning for him, though the group has also emphasized its broader resonance with anyone experiencing grief or separation. The metaphor of waiting for spring after a harsh winter reflects the hope of reunion and healing.
"Spring Day" achieved extraordinary chart longevity in South Korea. It became the longest-charting song on MelOn's digital chart, staying on the daily chart for over 1,000 consecutive days. The track also earned BTS their first "roof hit", a real-time all-kill on all major Korean streaming platforms. Internationally, it debuted at number 15 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 and reached number one on iTunes in 14 countries. The music video, directed by YongSeok Choi of Lumpens, drew inspiration from Ursula K. Le Guin's short story The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas and the film Snowpiercer. It features symbolic imagery including a train, a mountain of laundry, cherry blossoms, and a subtle reveal that only Jimin is physically present at the end, suggesting themes of memory and moving forward.
