Shake It Off

Shake It Off is a dance-pop song by Taylor Swift, released as the lead single from her fifth studio album 1989 on August 18, 2014, through Big Machine Records. Swift wrote the lyrics herself and co-composed the melody with producers Max Martin and Shellback. The track was Swift's official declaration of her transition from country to mainstream pop, built on a looping drum beat, a Mellotron-based saxophone line, and a handclap-accented bridge. The lyrics shrug off media criticism and rumors, inspired by Swift's personal experiences with public scrutiny.

The single debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent four weeks at the top, remaining on the chart for 50 weeks. It reached the top 10 in over a dozen countries and earned a Diamond certification from the RIAA, making Swift the first female artist with both a Diamond single and a Diamond album. The song received three Grammy nominations at the 57th ceremony: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance.

Mark Romanek directed the music video, which features Swift comically failing at various dance styles including ballet, cheerleading, and twerking. The video sparked accusations of cultural appropriation for its use of moves associated with Black culture. Swift performed the song on her 1989 World Tour, Reputation Stadium Tour, and Eras Tour.
