    About This Song

In 2011, T-ara released "Roly-Poly," a disco-tinged track that became a defining hit of the K-pop second generation. The song was written and produced by Shinsadong Tiger and Choi Kyu-sung, the duo behind T-ara's earlier smash "Bo Peep Bo Peep." It served as the lead single from the group's second mini-album, John Travolta Wannabe, which dropped on June 29, 2011. The album's retro concept, inspired by 1970s disco and the film Saturday Night Fever, was a departure from the group's previous electronic pop sound.

"Roly-Poly" quickly became a commercial juggernaut. Within a month, it generated over $2.3 million in digital sales, averaging $280,000 per day. Though it peaked at number two on the Gaon Digital Chart, it ended 2011 as the best-selling song in South Korea, with over four million downloads. That figure remains the highest for any K-pop girl group single on Gaon during the 2010s. The track also earned three weekly music program wins on M Countdown and Inkigayo.

T-ara, consisting of members Jiyeon, Eunjung, Hyomin, Soyeon, Boram, and Qri, promoted the song with a distinctive choreography that mimicked the "Roly-Poly" moves, complete with finger-pointing and hip sways. The song's success helped solidify T-ara's status as one of the top girl groups of the era, though the group would later face controversy and lineup changes. A Japanese version of "Roly-Poly" was released on February 29, 2012, featuring new lyrics in Japanese and a slightly rearranged instrumental, allowing T-ara to tap into the J-pop market.
