Playing with Fire

Blackpink shifted their sonic identity with Playing with Fire, a track that abandoned the soft debut concept for something sharper and more mature. Released on November 1, 2016, as the lead single from their second digital album Square Two, the song arrived alongside the ballad Stay. Teddy Park produced the track while co-writing it with R. Tee under YG Entertainment, creating a soundscape built on tropical house rhythms and heavy bass lines.

The music video directed by Seo Hyun-seung dropped the same day as the audio release. It placed the four members, Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé, and Lisa, in stark desert landscapes and industrial warehouses filled with pyrotechnics. The visual aesthetic matched the song's aggressive energy, using fire effects and dramatic lighting to reinforce the group's new "girl crush" image rather than their previous cute persona. [edit]
