    About This Song

"Pieces of Me" is the debut single by Ashlee Simpson, released on May 17, 2004, as the lead track from her first album, Autobiography, on Geffen Records. Simpson wrote it with Kara DioGuardi and John Shanks, who also produced. The song is a pop-rock number built on clean, driving guitars and a big, radio-ready chorus. Lyrically, it captures the relief and happiness of a new relationship, opening with the lines "On a Monday, I am waiting / Tuesday, I am fading / And by Wednesday, I can't sleep / Then the phone rings, I hear you..." The theme is finding comfort in a new boyfriend rather than heartbreak.

Commercially, the single peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached the top 10 in Australia, Denmark, Norway, and the United Kingdom. It remains Simpson's biggest hit and her only single to reach the top 10 on both the US and UK charts. Critics have kept returning to it: Billboard ranked it at number 97 on its 2017 list of the 100 greatest choruses of the 21st century and at number 26 on its 2020 ranking of the 50 greatest "minivan rock" songs. In 2025, Rolling Stone placed it at number 208 on its list of the 250 greatest songs of the 21st century.

The music video became an MTV staple, and in July 2024 Vevo Footnotes marked its 20th anniversary with a behind-the-scenes retrospective. The song is closely tied to the Autobiography era and to Simpson's high-profile 2004 Saturday Night Live lip-syncing incident, which became a pop-culture touchstone of the period. Its 20th anniversary in 2024 prompted renewed retrospective coverage, and it remains the song most associated with her.
