Merry Christmas, Please Don't Call

Jack Antonoff flips the script on holiday traditions with Merry Christmas, Please Don't Call, a melancholic indie pop single that swaps festive cheer for social anxiety. Released on November 13, 2024, the track serves as a sharp departure from traditional winter music by focusing on the dread of family obligations and the desire to set boundaries during the season. The song captures the specific feeling many experience when forced interactions clash with personal needs for solitude.

Antonoff wrote and produced the entire piece alone, maintaining his signature sonic palette of layered synthesizers and driving percussion. Critics have described the result as heartbreaking and bitter, noting how the upbeat instrumentation contrasts with somber lyrics about avoiding gatherings. The Rolling Stone review highlighted the release as a significant moment after years of teasing the song at live shows, marking its arrival in the band's official catalog.

Culturally, the track has resonated with listeners navigating modern social expectations, becoming a staple in discussions about anti-holiday sentiment. Fans have analyzed its nostalgic yet sad content on forums like Reddit, praising it as a cathartic outlet for those who prefer quiet nights over celebrations. While chart data shows immediate traction internationally, including a peak at number 84 on the Billboard Philippines Hot 100 in September 2025, its primary impact remains its relatability to audiences seeking an alternative to seasonal pressure.
